  • How long does it take to learn an instrument?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer—learning an instrument is a journey! With regular practice and consistent lessons, most students can begin playing at a basic level within just a few months. From there, growth continues as skills build, confidence increases, and music becomes even more fun. Many of our students choose to take lessons on a long-term basis because they love learning new songs, setting new goals, and continually improving. For most, lessons become something they truly enjoy and look forward to each week!

  • I do not know anything about music. How can I help my child practice?

Even if you don’t have a musical background, you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring your child’s practice time, he or she will make progress. Many parents occasionally sit in on their child’s music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a song should sound.

  • Do I need an instrument at home?

For instrument specific lessons, YES. We do require students to have their own instrument at home within a month of beginning lessons. Please ask about recommendations of where to buy or rent instruments.

For Band classes, we rotate through instruments and do not expect families to have a full band set up at home. If your musician has access to an instrument, they will always improve with leaps and bounds by practicing between classes. Most of the season, our band classes are designed to not have a practice requirement.

  • What happens if a student is sick?

If a student needs to cancel a lesson, our teachers will provide a personalized recorded lesson via LessonMate, delivered directly to your email. Students are also welcome to attend a group class for an in-person make-up, if they prefer.

Please contact the studio if you need help accessing a recorded lesson or if you would like to book a group make-up lesson. You can reach us at 817-765-6888.

  • What about holidays?

Our calendar is available in the studio lobby and on our website. All holiday closures are marked on there.

Most months you will receive 4 lessons, sometimes 3 (Ex: When we’re closed for Thanksgiving) and sometimes 5.

We factor all this and the holiday closures into the calendar and everyone, no matter what day you have a lesson, will get the same number of lessons across the year.

We remain open most weekday holidays.  There will always be clear communication for closures!

  • How can a student be supported at home?

Set the music directly with their instrument in an obvious place.

Create a consistent time for practice.

Allow them to have the space to make mistakes and try again.

While music can be its own reward, sometimes creating a new habit benefits from pairing the behavior with something else rewarding. (Inspired by “Atomic Habits”) “Once I complete my practice, then I get to ____”

More individual shorter focus times are more valuable than just 1 or 2 long practice times.

Communicating questions with your teacher in class is always encouraged!

  • When do I get to see my musician perform?

Aledo Music Academy will provide at least 2 performance showcases each year, typically scheduled in the Spring and Fall and Holidays.  They are designed with themes to be fun-filled, family events that showcase students’ musical journey.  The goal is to support a desire to strive for excellence without creating a stressful experience.

Students may be invited to additional performance opportunities throughout the year.

Performance is not required but we find that even the musicians that seem the most nervous find an extra drive and push of self-accomplishment around showcases.

We reserve the last 5 minutes of each class to invite parents in to hear what your musician has been working on, which gives weekly “performance” opportunities to build confidence in playing or singing in front of even the harshest critic (because in our minds, we musicians tend to get most nervous playing for the people we live with - totally normal and not your fault, it’s just a thing that happens to the best of us).

  • How and when should I pay for the lesson?

All lesson tuition is automatically charged on the 1st of each month using the payment method on file. If you need to withdraw from lessons for any reason, we require written notice and completion of our withdrawal form submitted to the office by the 15th of the month. This timeline allows us to maintain consistent, stable schedules for our teachers, helping us retain exceptional instructors and honor their time and commitment.

Example: If you need to withdraw by December, your withdrawal notice and form is due before the 15th of November

We also value flexibility for our families. If plans change, remaining lessons may be transferred to a different instrument or class (including art or tutoring), gifted to a family member or friend, or donated to Music Meets Medicine, a nonprofit organization we partner with where our music teachers provide lessons to children receiving care in hospitals.

  • Are there any additional expected expenses?

We love celebrating our students and offering lots of performance opportunities throughout the year! Students are invited to participate in two recitals annually, and some performances may include a small performance or participation fee. Certain larger productions—such as musical theater performances or off-site venue events—may require tickets for audience members to help cover venue and production costs. We also host free showcases throughout the year, where both performers and audience members can attend at no charge.

As students begin their music journey, you may also want to plan for music books or materials, which are available for purchase in our lobby. We’re always happy to recommend instruments for at-home practice, and we carry a selection of beginner instruments and accessories for convenience.

There is a one-time annual registration fee of $50. Other than these occasional and optional expenses, our monthly tuition remains consistent and predictable, allowing families to plan with confidence.
